    But there is often confusion between short circuit and open circuit.

    An open circuit is a missing connection, or a wire broken, so that the current that should flow can't.

    You can prevent opens by using flexible wires in places where movement can occur, by checking that all s***w connections are tight, that solder connections are good, and that you don't mix copper and aluminum wires.


  2. A short circuit is when electricity finds a quicker path to ground than what it is supposed to. This robs the circuit of the power that it needs to do what it's designed for. The circuit is 'shorter' than normal.

    Preventing short circuits is easy - don't let exposed wires touch anything metal that they're not supposed to. If things are wired correctly, and are maintained, this should not be a problem.
