Help in replacing outside faucet

We need to replace the outside water faucet. It is the type that you can remove the handle - well the top the handle fits on is stripped so it is very difficult to turn off the water. Is the faucet something that can be removed and replaced easily enough????

  1. Just replace it - also when you cut the old one off - be prepared for all the water that is in the system to come out - could be a lot !!

Did one of mine a few months back wish I'd done all 3.

  2. Unscrew the whole inner stem..the stem is where the k**b attaches too..then you can take it to Home depot..and just buy a new stem and and s***w it back in..then your handle will fit on it..let me try to find you a picture to help out..Stem and packings all come together..Look at figure B here..although this is an interior faucet..outside ones have stems/packings similar to the one in picture be..that has the stripped stem on it..It will s***w out..and simply replace this whole thing as I mentioned..take your knowb with you and the old packings..they will sell this part by itself..it just screws in..

    here's my take:

replace the whole "hose bibb".  trying to match brands to be able to exchange the guts can be a hassle.  check your local store first with a picture.  something tells me it'll be too old and you'll wind up changing the whole fixture anyhow.  you'll have to shut off the water anyway, and for a few $$$'s you might as well replace the whole hose bibb.

turn off the water and unscrew the old faucet and replace it.

  4. No. just turn off the main supply-drain all of the faucets and other hose bibs, then cut or unscrew the old one and solder or s***w on a new one.
