I have two systems with XP Pro....

I wanted to make a network between them for sharing files.

I have a Zebronics 8port switch and 2 LAN cables.

I have set IP as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with subnet as 255.255.255.0.....

After connecting with two systems both the systems show its network is unplugged.....

  1. change the ip adresses to start anywhere after 192.168.0.2.

192.168.0.1 is used for the switch adress on your network which is causing a duplicate adress error.

change you ip adresses to 192.158.0.3 and .4

  3. Crossover cables are used to connect two PC's directly, you don't need them to connect through a switch.

Do both computers belong to your work group? Does your work group have a unique name? Have you Shared you Files and folder? Do you have Client for Microsoft Networks Installed? Is the power turned on on your switch? Are you using the Xover Port on your switch? Try different Ports. Is File and Printer Sharing enabled on both PC's? If you are using Crossover cables this may be the problem. It should say Cat 6 on the cables. Do you have the NIC's installed properly and are the drivers installed? Are the NICS working?

I hope this helps. You need to do some troubleshooting. This will be a great learning experience.

    Cheers

  4. Do you have a crossover cable or patch cable. Need to have a crossover!

  5. your switch is 192.168.0.1. you need to start at 192.168.0.2 for one computer and 192.168.0.3 for the other one. the gateway is 192.168.0.1 (switch)

    example:

    192.168.0.2      --IP Adress

    255.255.255.0 --Subnet

    192.168.0.1     --Gateway

when you have it done for both computers, you should make sure you put them in the same workgroup by right clicking on My Computer->Properties->Computer Name->Change-> then on the text box next to workgroup give it the same name for both computers.

after you finish and reboot they will then see each other. Make sure the firewall allows the sharing of printers and files.

you should be able to see the shared folders of both computers.

PS. Do NOT USE crossover cables. thats only for direct connection from PC to PC. Use regular network cables since your using a switch.
