Help installing RAM in my COMPAQ Presario SR1610NX?

I recently bought a RAM upgrade (1GB OCZ brand), and I opened my computer and put it in, easily. But I cant get it to recognize it, and install the software (or whatever it is it needs to). Does it need to do anything else (sorry cant use a question mark, Key broke about 5 seconds ago.). Like, it usually says "found new hardware" when I start my computer after adding new hardware. It didn{t do that this time, how do I get it to install it¿ (keys broken) I tried going into control panel then opening add new hardware, but I didnt find it there.

I don't know the specifics for that model Compaq, but the problem may be that you cannot mix memory cards.  For example:  you have 2 256mb sticks in the machine.  If you want to add more memory, it may be that the machine requires 2 more 256 sticks instead of a 1gb stick. (you cannot mix memory)  I think if you take out the existing memory, then put in the new memory, it most likely will work.  Good luck.  You can go on Compaqs site, and look up info re: your computer for specifics.
