my walls are not perfect, so when i put the counter on top of the cabnets, there are gaps in places between the wall and counter. i had a friend mud and tape the drywall, he did awful. the seams are part of the reason for the gaps. the other problem is my corner is not exactly 90. it is a bar area, so we were not planning on useing a backsplash. what should i do to fix the gaps???

  1. silicone the gaps they sell paint able   silicone just paint it the same color as the walls

  2. Fill it with inside corner trim

  3. The sheetrock can be corrected prior to doing the counter top if that bad.  This is the least of your problems.

What kind of counter top are you putting on?

Premade formica tops, formica on plywood, tile on backerboard, granite?

The only one I dont like is the premade tops, usually on particle board which when it gets wet swells.

Formica on plywood is cut and shaped to fit.

I would not put a counter top on with out a back splash.

Back splash is a separate unit unlike the premade units so this will close a lot of gaps when installed

  4. Ducktape, plenty o' ducktape!

Silicon should do the trick...unless the gap is ridiculous.

  5. other than the less than attractive caulk, or a trim piece(which you will also have to caulk the top edge), you really have only 2 alternatives:

    1) sand the wall along the countertop edge to even it out.

    2) 'scribe' the countertop using a pencil compass marking along the counter following the wall and cut the countertop to sit flush.

Hope that helps, sorry but your buddy put you in a bit of a pickle.

  6. Place the countertop in it's correct location then use a compass (open about one quarter inch) to scribe the wall profile onto the counter top. You can use a belt sander to shape the edge to fit the wall. Only remove enough material to make a tight fit not the whole quarter inch, that line is just a guide.
