  1. Never really heard the saying, however in my experience treating lawns, I have seen many weeds that have more that 3 or for that matter 5 leaves. One in particular is the Carolina Falsedandelion. It is that little yellow flower that your kids love to pick and bring home to mommy, you know the one you try and carefully pull out by the root and it always breaks. In the Lawn Treating business though, an unwanted plant, (regardless of what it is) in an unwanted area is a weed. Funny as that may sound, by definition a weed is just that.

  2. The leaves of three saying is:

"leaves of three, let it be"  refers to poison ivy having 3 leaves

in a cluster so you should avoid touching the plant.  Many plants have any number of leaves  but it you do not touch "leaves of three" you will avoid poison ivy.

  3. The true definition of a weed is "any plant growing in a place you don't want it."  What a weed is, has nothing to do with the amount of leaves.
