  1. Actually you can get panel which can go up in about 15 minutes on a large area. They are in Lowe's & Home Depot for about $18 a panel in 24" X 18" sizes in a variety of colors & styles. (use double sided tape method..its so FAST)

This will allow you to cover the glue residue(is it mastic glue?)

Countertops - If you have laminate you can easily just go to Lowe's & Home Depot and get stock postform tops with a waterfall edge for about $9 a lft. This means a medium size kitchen can be done for about $250. Postform laminate is better imho than sheet goods and is inexpensive & better than tiling a countertop. Each store has about 5 - 6 colors in stock with hundreds more you could order for around $17 lft.

Time involved with 18lft of tops (includes removing old tops & sink if your existing countertops are postform/rolled edged) is about 2 hours or less.

    Good Luck

  2. Go to your hardware store and ask for a product to remove glue or try to rent a sander to sand down the area with the tile glue.   After that  apply a base paint and then apply "melamine" paint. It is like a plastic hard cover and its the cheapest way to go. Its also good for the counter top.
