I am very interesting in sailing and learning all about working on the water. Im 19 and would like to become very knowledgeable on the topic and willing to get a small job on the water to help me get the hang of it. Can anyone refer any books, websites, or something along those lines to let me get a better understanding of it all? Maybe some good starting jobs i would be able to get with no experience?

  1. Your best bet is to get involved in a dinghy school locally. Dinghies provide the opportunity to learn the basics quickly. They are usually easy to handle and are great fun. They will set in your mind the necessary knowledge for larger boats.

All you have to do is ask your local sailing club how to get involved. The thing about sailors is they are very friendly on the whole - so don't be shy! You should also join a forum or two where you can read and learn a lot quickly.

Simply type sailing forum into the search engine and go with the top couple. Similar for the sailing club for dingies. The other thing you might want to think about that will set you apart from other sailors is maintenance. The ability to help owners fix their boats is a very powerful way to increase your influence.

There a few pointers at http://www.boatpride.com for maintenance.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!
