I just found this strange, hard, non-moveable lump about 1 - 2 cm away from my ear lobe.

its sore when i push on it and is the size of a pea.

when i stretch my jaw, it sticks out more and is larger.

I also have wisdom teeth growing through at the moment and have a cold.

what is this?

  1. It sounds like it is a lymph node. They usually become swollen when we are fighting infection. Since the lump is sore and you have a cold and a tooth coming in it is probably just a lymph node. Not too much to worry about if that is the case. Just your body fighting for ya!

  2. Maybe an abscess or you are feeling the wisdom teeth.

  3. Could be an ingrown hair or a sebaceous cyst. Both fit the description.

  4. Lymph node is the most probable answer. As long as the skin overlying it isn't red and it doesn't get any larger, then you are fine.

It should take at least 2 weeks to go away.

So, relax for now and keep a casual eye on it, should anything change, as in it it gets larger, red, hot, or has streaks of red going away from it, get yourself to a doc asap, other than that it is most probably a lymph node.
