Question:

Help managing Delphiniums - please help me grow my flowers well.?

I planted a small packet of Delphium seeds a couple years ago on the N side of our cement block milkhouse thinking a few spikes of my favorite flower would look nice there. While they are very beautiful, the've become thick, lush, monsters.

How can I transplant and share them with others? Do they re-grow each year from the seeds that develop when the flowers die? I tried finding out on the internet and I see many things as possible, but what's best for me?

I would like to move some of them to other places in the yard, do I dig them up and divide them like other perennials? Can I harvest their seeds and give to friends or are their seeds sterile? What's the best time of year to do this?

I have read on the internet the plants live 2-3 years, so if this is the second year, should I expect they will die out next year?

I swear, I planted maybe 15 seeds - a couple springs ago - now there has got to be 100 plants - so it appears they're reproducing from the thousands of see

  1. You are right on all counts. Delphiniums do re-seed each year from the flowers, you have them located on the North side of the house so I am guessing they are receiving morning sun; you can move them, just dig out what you want to move, making sure to did deep enough not to cut off the roots. They will need support and in a place that they will get about the same sunlight.

You can dig up a piece and move it-now would be a good time so it can settle before fall weather changes. They may go into shock for a few days when you transplant them but watch them , they should be fine. I doubt if your plants will die out you have them against a wall and protected, but if you are worried save some seeds for next year. Yes you can harvest the seeds for next year, keep them in a cool dry place over the winter.

  2. Delphiniums are perennials, they should be easy to divide and distribute among your friends.

  3. I think you should water them everyday, but if you check the weather and it's going to rain dont water them and oh yeqah sometimes birds take the seeds and eat them. so yeah hope i could help.
