Can somebody tell me what's happening to Brazilian students who (try) to go to Ireland? I've heard that they don't have troubles with visas and things like that, but nearly 50 Brazilian people were arrested at Immigration this year for the same unknown reasons...is it true?

I'm thinking of going there to study Gaeilge perhaps, but right now I'm a bit worried about that...will I be arrested as well?? what can I do to avoid that?

Thanks in advance,

Natalia Danzmann.

  1. Oh, welcome to my country!

A few things to be careful of...

    1. There are some BOGUS universities targeting people interested in studying in Ireland. They charge fees and the unfortunate students are left stranded. (They may have premises and all that, but really and truly the so-called qualifications are not worth the paper they're printed on) MAKE SURE you only apply to legitimate universities. If you're concerned, contact us here on Y Answers, and we'll tell you if the place has a good reputation.

    2. Someone said that relatively few Irish people speak Gaelige. That's true, but don't let that stop you if you just want to learn out of love for the language. If you want to learn for future purposes, I respectfully suggest you learn another language/subject, as well as Gaelige, not only Gaelige. That way you'll get to study in Ireland.

    3. Just do your paperwork, and tell the immigration officers the truth.

    Wishing you all the best!!

  2. I never heard of Brazilians in particular being targeted .... I think you should contact the Irish Embassy or Consulate in your country and talk to them directly. It is possible that these Brazilians came with without the correct paperwork and tried to claim asylum.

  3. Yeah the party is somewhat over for Brazilians coming to Ireland, There are already thousands of them in Ireland illegally and the EU wants that cleaned up, They came originally to work in a chicken plant in Co Galway, But with the Cooling of the Irish economy and unemployment rising fast these people who have basically taken over the town of Gort are becoming very unpopular.

  4. Have the right paper work and I'm sure you will be fine.

  5. The same unknown reason? Are you sure?

I have a Japanese friend who was arrested/deported for telling the immigration officer that she was going to Ireland for 4 months, and her visa was only eligible for 3.

Don't make silly mistakes like that and you should be sailing!

  6. I have a Brazilian working for me and he is legally here. He just needed a visa so you need to check out with the Irish embassy what is the story there.

In relation to learning Gaeilge, the immigration dept won't take that as a reason to come here as far as I know.  However, they will look at learning English as a reason to come if you are a student or in a job or degree course (eg law in Brazil) which requires fluent English.  Gaeilge or Irish is not widely spoken.  It is nice to study the history and culture of a country but dont be fooled into thinking it will be of great use to you here or anywhere else.  Study it if you are genuinely interested in it but not as a reason to come here. I agree with the advice to check out carefully what college you are studying with as there are some useless ones out there.

Immigration officials never arrest for unknown reasons.  You will find if you investigate that the paperwork was not in order or the passport was too near its expiry date or something like that.

My Brazilian friend loves it here but only has a visa for two years.  He is cold though so pack warm clothes if you are coming!

Good luck and if you go through the proper channels you will have no problem.

  7. i've heard nothing of the sort, i'm sure once you have the correct paperwork and come here with a legitimate company you should have no probloems...ireland isn't a very strict country where immigration is concerned...

as far as your resons for coming here though, what possible reson would you have to learn Irish? most Irish people don't speak a word of irish, and only a fraction of those that do have enough to use it in everyday life, not that they would need to...

learn a usefull language like french or chinese...=D

  8. I haven't heard anything about a lot of Brazilians being arrested - I don't think that's true - I think 'Intrepid's' advice is best. If you do decide to come I think you will enjoy it. Best of luck.

  9. I think a lot of the arrests were when we played Brazil

in a soccer international and customs thought they were not football fans but intended to stay

check your paperwork - get it right and you should be ok !
