  1. I assume that the jet ski has NY registration numbers on it.  What you have to do is contact the previous owner and have him/her request a duplicate title.  Then send you a bill of sale along with the title.  Armed with that, CT, should issue you a new title and numbers.  Good luck.    P.S. If you can't locate the person you bought it from.  Contact the CT. DNR on what to do.

  2. Nice to have some clear details instead of frenzied words jumbled, thank you.

Just to reinforce that if you don't have a lock on that trailer latch, get one and keep it on it at all times.  PWC's and boats are prime targets for theft in any place.

Even though you lost the registration, you still need to have the bill of sale with you, Hull ID Number, and proof of having the PWC assessed for property taxes.

    *Updated*

As mentioned by another answerer, since the registration you lost was from New York, you will have to make a pilgrimage to the closest New York DMV.  Call ahead to insure you have everything you will need.

Expect to spend at least $200 to $400 dollars or more for fuel costs, penalty fees, and processing charges overall.

    End of update..

The PWC trailer title, if you filled it in correctly, you should be able to process it in your state and get it in your name.

I guess your state does not require proof of insurance for registration on boats or PWC's.  However, most states will ticket you on the spot if you are caught without it, if not worse.

Regarding your state's policy on transfer of ownership of registered property...

I'm quoting from your state DMV:  http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=817...

"The owner of a boat shall notify the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles within 15 days and provide information as to:

    Sale or transfer of ownership

    Theft or loss

Destruction or abandonment of the boat

The notification shall be in writing and shall include the certificate of number or certificate of decal. "

    End of quote.

Failure to do so can result in costly penalties (most states usually charged per day violation).

This should be the last revision needed to answer your question fully...

  3. take the hull identification number to the motor vehicle and tell them what you told us

bring the bill of sale with you  there will be a charge
