I need help citing this quote. It is said by Francis Bacon, but the librarian said that when is cite it in the actual paper is should write the Author of the book(not Francis Bacon).

Here is my sentence:

According to Francis Bacon "Revenge is a kind of wild justice, which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out"(Kaplan 167).

I got this quote from the Book Of Qutations whose author is John Bartlett but the librarian said to write the Editor's name instead of the author is she correct.

thanks for the help. really appreciated

  1. Why would you credit the editor of a book and not the author of the quote?

I believe your librarian is incorrect.

However, if she is in charge of grading - do it her way.

  2. She is absolutely incorrect 110%.  The bottom line..doesn't matter where you get the quote...Francis Bacon said it, so you have to site him.

NOW on the other hand, if you are going to at the end of your paper include a bibliography/reference page, then after the quote, you can put a little number...and then on your reference page (the last page of your paper..it is seperate page), put that same number and list the reference you got it from.  Then you are going to put the details like book's name, editor, copyright years, etc.  I think maybe the librarian was thinking you were going to at end of your paper add a reference/bibliography page.  (I am not sure what level of education you are at, but college/post-college, usually most people add the reference/bibliography page and list all their references they get their material).

Hope that helps out and good luck with your paper. :-)
