  1. hamster food found in pet shops.

also, carrots or lettuce cut into small pieces. however, if you feed them these ( twice a week ) dont give them water anymore they will get over hydrated.

  2. Hamsters are a great choice as a pet.  There are two main classifications of hamsters: syrians (the larger classic hamsters, very friendly) and dwarfs (much smaller hamsters, and despite what people say, dwarfs are just as sweet and fun as syrians).

Heres are some links to learn more about the differences:

    1.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_hams...

2.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phodopus_su... (sorry that link is like 1 breed of dwarf in preticular, but the dwarfs are very similar)

As for the hamster food, you should most definately feed them the mix of seeds and nuts that come in the bags at the pet store.  You can try different foods to see if your hamster likes one kind better then another, but with my hamsters i usually try to stick to one brand that I know they like.  You can give your hamster vitamins or treats, my hamsters love vitakraft strawberry chews.  And what they love are freshly cut and washed vegetable.  Especially lettuce and celery.

Hamsters love to play, so know when you get a hamster, that you will have to take time out of your day to play with your hamster (this should be fun lol). They love to crawl in toilet papper rolls (my brother likes to make courses out of them for my hamster to run through) and they absolutely LOVE to run in those little hamster balls.  Be careful when you are buying a hamster ball though, because there are smaller balls intended for dwarfs, and larger ones for syrians.

    Heres a link:

http://www.wikihow.com/Play-With-a-Hamst... (it says on this link that the hamster may bite you out of no where, and that is true, but if you dont do anything to annoy your hamster, that most likely will not happen, but some hamsters do have very bad tempers)

To prevent biting, get a young hamster, and start handling and playing with it while it is still very young.  This will get him/her used to people.  Don't do thinks that will encourage biting, such as sticking your finger by its mouth.  Some hamsters just do not like people so they bite.  This is not because they hate you, its because we first had the idea to keep hamsters as pets not to long ago, so they are a lot less friendly then dogs and cats.

Here's a link if you have a hamster who just cant stop biting:

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Gerbils-Hamst... (the part about some hamsters being very friendly outside their cages and a little more edgey while in their cages is very true, my favorite hamster (dwarf) that i've ever had was like that)

Wheels.  Hamsters are nocturnal so they abosolutely go nuts at night.  Their favorite activity: running on the wheel.  Some wheels are more quiet then others. For example, the wheel that came with my critter trail cage was so loud, I cant sleep with my hammy in my room.  So then I decided to pay the extra 8 bucks and buy the silent wheel.  Its not totally silent but its about 50 times better then the basic wheel that the cages come with.  But you wont need to do this if you are not a light sleeper (im a very light sleeper) or if your hamster isnt in your room.

If your hamster ever looks the slightest bit out of the normal, you should definately take it to the vet.  They are much smaller then dogs and cats, and their way of showing illness isnt that obvious as if a dog or cat was sick.  You should always be safe then sorry.

I hope I helped and I wish you and your new hammy the very best!

  3. they love to eat vegetabls to make  them feel much better

  4. you should defenatly 100% feed your hampsters the food that come mixed its like trail mix but for hamsters it has seeds corn and stuff. look is up!

  5. Gerbils are better! They are more friendly, pee less, don't smell as much, and they don't bite!

  6. You should feed hamsters the food that you buy the pet store. Here is a great link, it will give you a bunch of info on food: http://www.freewebs.com/happyhamsterhelp...

  7. The best food for hamsters is only the commercial hamster feed mix available in the pet shops. Hamsters need variety in their diet and the best way to do it is to get the commercial hamster feed that contains all the vitamins and minerals that your hamster requires. Give him the commercial feed and you are sure to have a healthy hamster for a long time.

You can feed him treats occassionally. However, the commercial hamster mix should account for 80% of the hamster daily diet and only 20% should come from treats.

Also remember any treat you give him should be unsalted, without sugar and without flavour. Visit the following link for a list of foods you can and not give a hamster. Take a printout and put in on a board for easy reference.

  8. Most pet stores sell a mix in a bag all ready made up for hamsters. Give them that. They need stuff with alot of protein. I have rats so I tend to stay away from all that protein. You can feed them fruits and vegetables. I wouldnt give any green ones, can give them diarrea. Carrots are good though. They love strawberries. Just check around.

  9. feed them nutriphase gold hamster food and a piece of carrot, celery, or broccoli occasionally.
