i have a swimming class in school. the pool that we use is about 4.5 feet high, and i stand 5'9, so the water is up on my chest. my problem is that i haven't float in water before, ever in my life, and i just can't let go of the floor, i mean im so scared to take my feet off the floor, so the whole class, i was just walking in the pool! that was my first class though, so they said that's just fine, but i feel so humiliated!! all of my classmates can float and swim effortlessly, and looks like a lot of fun, and then when it comes to me, im so scared to float! the water is just up on my chest but i just can't take my feet off the floor!! i have experienced that before ( to let go of the floor) and i almost drowned, so now im so scared. what scares me the most is even when i learn to float, i can't control my body and i can't stand again, that i can't touch the floor with my feet.. please help me... this is so humiliating.. please teach me how to move in the water...

  1. take a swimming lesson...?! duuurrrrr. :)

  2. I'm only 13, but this is how I float and swim on my back too! I relax my whole body, and arch my back, (but I don't go in a total bridge on water. lol.) you might sink a little. When you do, don't panic and start slapping at the water, because I am 80% sure that's what you did when you almost drowned. Then, when I swim on my back, I start to *gracefully* use my legs as if they were flippers, and kind of slide my hands up and down in the water and I start to float and swim. Also, to float, don't keep all of your body near. Spread out your legs and arms. I don't remember why it works. It has something to do with buyoancy. When I want to stand, (and the water covers me at the pool I go to because I'm pretty short. 4 feet 9 inches) all I do is put my legs together, and KIND OF jerk forward, and slide my feet down, and my feet touch the ground. If what I said helps you, please choose me as best answer.

    Good luck!

    Go out there and SWIM!!!!!

  3. To float you need to relax your muscles.  You also need to arch your back (when floating on back).  Try holding onto the wall and arching your back and let go when you feel ready.  Another thing to try is to use a kickboard or noodle behind the head.  If you can get someone to work with you have them stabilize your head first, if your head is held you won't go under

  4. Candace sounds like a real a*****e. It's really not as bad as you think. I am a professional wakeboarder and I have been in some bad situations (knocked out upside-down, drowning in the water) but I'm alive today. Don't worry, all you have to do to float is fill your lungs up with air, and just lean back. When it comes to swimming the main problem people have is that they freak out and think they can't do it. EVERYONE can swim, there are paraplegics that can swim. DON'T FREAK OUT. d**n, sometimes people are ******* of things that aren't scary at all.

  5. There's not much I can do to help you from here. Just get some confidence and know that nothing bad will happen to you. It sounds like there are plenty of people around you to make sure you are safe. Just put your feet up and when you want them down, put them down. Do what you're supposed to do, but do it with confidence. That is the best advice I can give you.

    Best of luck!
