  1. it's getting warmer.

and CO2, resulting from our burning of coal and oil is causing it.

In simple terms, without any global warming, the temperature of the earth would be far below freezing, and there'd be no life at all. Water (clouds) is the strongest insulator. CO2 and methane (CH4) come next. Water is self limiting -- when there's too much of it in the atmosphere, it rains and restores the balance. CO2 and methane remain in atmosphere far longer. The way CO2 works is that it interacts with some energy level radiation, but not all. Specifically, CO2 does not interact with light or ultraviolet radiation. It does, however, react with lower energy levels, found in infrared radiation. During the day, the earth heats up, absorbing energy from the sun. At night, that energy is radiated away into space as infrared radiation. Maybe you've noticed that on cloudy nights, it does not cool as much as on clear nights. That's because some of the infrared radiation is "reflected" back to the earth. CO2 does the same thing.

The way CO2 works is that molecules absorb energy, and then re-radiate it. When it's re-radiated, that occurs in a random direction. Which means that some comes back to the earth.

To some extent, adding CO2 to the atmosphere is like putting an extra blanket on when it's cold in the winter. unfortunately, when it's already warm, it's not very helpful. During the last 4,000 years, the average temperature has varied by less than one single degree. Predictions are that the current increase might be between 3 and 8 degrees. There's a wide variation because it's not known how seriously the various governments will act to address the problem. In addition, if everyone stopped burning coal, oil, and natural gas completely today, the temperature would continue to increase for several decades, due to the CO2 that's already been added to the atmosphere. *phew* All that said, here's the science to back it up.

NAS, NOAA, NSF, NASA, EPA, MIT, UCLA all agree. AGW (Anthropogenic Global Warming) is a serious problem.

posted by global warming lies i might add.

you'll note that over the last 4,500 years the temperature has varied from the norm by a maximum of 0.7 degrees.

and the projected temperature rise in the next few decades is something like 3-8 degrees.

  2. Climate change is the change of weather patterns and is taking place all over the world. The climate can become warmer or colder and can vary from day to day. It affects the amount of rainfall, which decreases or increases.

Global warming /climate change are the main causes for many global issues and if we can reduce global warming and climate change, it will have a positive affect on other global issues such as endangered animals and the rising of the sea levels.

Global warming and climate change as be en around for ages but it was only discovered in the 1820’s Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier found out that greenhouse gases trap heat and make the earth warmer. He found this out when he discovered a continuous increase of the average temperatures over years.

Australia’s temperatures have increased 0.8℃ since late in the 19th century, and are estimated to increase another 5.8℃ in the next 100 years if nothing is done to stop climate change.

    Natural Causes

Some of the natural causes of climate change are:

    * Continental Drift – Scientists once believed that all the continents were joined together and formed one big land mass. The drift affected the climate because it changed the ocean currents and winds.

    *  Volcanoes – Volcanic eruptions causes large volumes of sulphur dioxide (SO2), water vapor, dust, and ash into the atmosphere.

    * The Earths Tilt – Each year the earth follows a path around the sun. When it is summer in the northern hemisphere, it tilts towards the sun and when it is winter, the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. The climate gets affected if the tilt is changed. It can cause a change in weather patterns and a difference in the seasons.

    Human Causes

Some of the human causes of climate change are electricity use, car use, bus use, trucks use, paper use, a growing population and deforestation. If we cut back on electricity, car and bus use, the burning of fossil fuels, trucks and paper use we can make global warming less threatening. But to make a positive impact on reducing global warming, we all need to work together as a team.

Climate change leads to many things including negative affects for other global issues. The other affects of climate change are extreme weather, habitat loss for animals and plants, increase of endangered life, more diseases spreading, earlier spring arrival, coral reef bleaching

    Habitat Loss

Habitats for animals and plants are destroyed by the weather.

    Extreme Weather

Weather varies from day to day. There are more droughts, bush-fires, downpours, heavy snowfalls and flooding.

    Increase of endangered life

Plants and animals become endangered more often with habitat loss and the extreme weather.

    More diseases spreading

More diseases are spreading due to the warmer temperatures.

    Earlier spring arrival

Spring is arriving earlier in may parts of the world which causes earlier dates for plant blooming and leafing, and earlier animal egg-laying,and migration.

    Coral reef bleaching

Coral reef bleaching is caused by the increase of water temperatures and pollution.

Climate change is the main cause for many global issues such as the melting of the ice-caps and glaciers that are commonly found in cooler places such as the Arctic and Antarctica.

Ice-caps are great layers of land covered by ice and snow.

Glaciers are a large mass of ice that moves through a valley or moves outward from a centre. Glaciers are very common in Antarctica and can be found almost everywhere.

The glaciers and ice-caps are now starting to melt away due to the affects of climate change. This then leads to a rise in sea levels which have risen by 1.7mm per year. If we don’t put a end to climate change, the sea levels will rise 4 inches (10 centimetres) which is enough to flood and swamp many parts of South East Asia.

The ozone layer is a layer of transparent gas and is a region of the upper atmosphere that protects the earth from some of the sun’s harmful rays.

In Antarctica, there is a hole in the ozone layer which is one of the main causes for climate change. The hole in the ozone layer is a huge problem because more of the damaging rays of the sun is coming through to earth.  Not only does the hole in the ozone layer increase temperatures, it also increases the chance of getting diagnosed with skin cancer which makes people very sick and can eventually kill you and it’s also one of the main causes of endangered plant life.

Climate change will not completely end until the ozone layer is restored but for the hole in the ozone layer to repair completely it may take up to 50 years. The hole has been caused by humans but unlike some things, we can not make up for our mistakes and he hole must be repaired naturally in time but we still should try ad reduce climate change so the hole in the ozone layer doesn't get worse.

    How we can Help

We are the cause of climate change so we are responsible to make a difference. There are many ways to make a positive impact on climate change.

    Here are a few tips:

Save electricity by turning off the lights when they are not needed and turning off the TV and appliances off by the switch.

Bike ride, walk or catch public transport.

★  Planting trees on Plant a Tree Day.

★  Installing solar energy panels for heating your pool and your house.

★ Installing energy efficient light bulbs.

    ★  Using a hybrid car.

    ★ Recycling.

  4. O U R O P I N I O N

    An alarmist’s solution to criticism

Unless you’re among those who follow the global warming controvery with considerably more intensity than the average citizen, the name James Hansen probably doesn’t ring any bells. But it should.

Hansen is the original global warming alarmist. He is currently the head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Twenty years ago, in an appearance before several Congressional committees, Hansen warned that increasing human-generated CO2 content in the earth’s atmosphere was pushing up global temperatures, and that if generation of CO2 wasn’t cut back, we would face a “tipping point” from which there could be no return, and that the result of warming would doom life on earth as we know it.

He was called to testify in the early ’80s because in 1981 he and a team of scientists at Goddard had concluded that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would lead to global warming sooner than previously predicted. While other climatologists had already predicted that a trend would be apparent by 2020, Hansen predicted, in a paper published in Science, that the change was already occurring and that there would be record high temperatures as early as 1990.

In June of this year Hansen again testified before a Congressional committee, on the anniversary of his first alarmist appearance. And what has happened to global temperatures in the intervening 20 years? According to the University of Alabama at Huntsville, global satellite temperature data show that earth’s temperature has indeed changed; it’s gone down by half a degree (Fahrenheit). So much for Hansen’s prediction about tipping points, and carbon dioxide dangers, etc., etc.

But Hansen also did something else at in June. At an informal media event hosted by Worldwatch Institute, an environmental activist group, he called for criminal trials against scientists, corporate executives, and public policy advocates who disagree with him. He said skeptics are guilty of “crimes against humanity.” If you oppose his theories, in other words, you’re no better than Hitler, Stalin, Robert Mugabe, Papa Doc Duvalier, and the rest of history’s mass murderers, and ought to be sent to jail — or worse — for holding such views.

Much of the above is from the August issue of Environment & Climate News, a Heartland Institue publication. The Heartland Institute, you may not know, is a non-profit environmental organization that challenges global warming theories. Two letters to the editor today take note of a story published in the Sunday Press Dispatch (albeit buried on D7) that some 31,072 American scientists have signed a petition rejecting Hansen’s — among others — assertions that global warming has reached a crisis stage that is caused by human activity. The story about the petition originated with the Heartland Institute.

The petition puts the lie to claims such as the one by Al Gore (“The debate is over”) that there’s any sort of general agreement among the world’s scientific community about global warming, either as to what is causing it, that it’s in fact happening, or that there’s anything humanity can do about it.

Hansen, you might also want to know, is indeed a scientist. He’s an astronomer. But stifling dissent of his theories by shouting, “Off with their heads” does not exactly comport with scientific method. So it’s no surprise to also learn he’s Al Gore’s adviser on science. Uh huh.

  5. Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

    Stop Global Warming!!!

  6. You probably can't do it in time, but if you want to know what the most eminent scientists in the world have to say about the facts, you must read The Deniers by Lawrence Solomon.

  7. Who do you think you're kidding?

Of course you can find information on websites about global warming!

If you have a report due tomorrow, you should have been researching and learning from that research.

It is irresponsible to ask others to do your research for you. It is also cheating.

  8. Some facts you might want to note:

During the 70's the same alarmists were proclaiming the beginning of a new Ice age.

Nasa was found to be inaccurate in their belief that the last few years were the warmest in recorded history.  It was during the 30's dust bowl era, well before the Industrial age.  This error was caught by a young boy crunching numbers himself.

Many of the sensors for global temperature were found to be located in hot parking lots and near heater vents.  Hence, their data is pretty dubious.

Most of Al Gore's "facts" in his movie, have been disproved.  In fact, one of the scenes in the movie where the continental ice shelf collapses was a CGI sequence from another movie "Day after tomorrow".

I could go on all day, but as you might actually be noting, Global warming extremism is fueling what might turn into the world's worst case of fraud.  And we will be paying the cost of that fraud.

  9. It's pretty tough to add to something that we can't see.

My suggestion is to Google the subject and go from there.

  10. The concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has increased by 35% since the time of industrialization, from about 280 ppm[1] to 385 ppm[2]. This increase is fully the fault of mankind.[3]

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Two hundred years of scientific understanding[4] says that greenhouse gases trap energy/heat (in the form of infrared radiation) close to Earth's surface. Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases increase global temperatures.

CO2 is produced naturally through ways such as animal respiration. The anthropogenic (man made) sources of increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases include FOSSIL FUEL COMBUSTION, land use changes, and deforestation. Other greenhouse gases have likewise increased due to man's activities.
