Help me choose a garage plan to go with my house?

I'm trying to choose a garage style that will complement my existing home. The garage will be detached and needs to be at least 2 cars. My existing home has 3 dormers with curved top windows and a covered front porch. It is 2 story from the road but really 3 if you include the basement. My home is all brick with siding around the windows only. I don't know what style to choose for the garage. Would it be better to choose a 2 story garage with dormers or go with something different. My existing home looks somewhat similar in style to the Leave It to Beaver home only it's brick and 3 dormers. (cape cod style with a front porch!)

  1. Go with the 2 stories in the garage. But don't use it for storage! If you have kids or are planning on having kids or have grandkids make it their playroom! I regret not looking for something like that when we were looking at houses as time went on and a few of my kid's friends have that setup. It keeps all the video games and whatnot together and out of the house. If there are not/will not ever be kids in the picture make it your theater room with a huge tv and comfy chairs - the works!

  2. I would go for the dormers on the garage.

  3. Check out this site: http://www.eplans.com/projects/garages.h...  you can browse hundreds of garage plans, blueprints, and even create your own!  This is a link to a plan that sounds like exactly what you're looking for: http://www.eplans.com/garage_house-plans...

If it's feasible, I would do a story and a half for the detached, then you have the upper level for storage, game room, guest home, or whatever you choose to utilize the space for!  Your detatched garage should mimic the style of your home, but can be smaller in scale, so stick with the same brick and siding around the windows (and same roof of course).

We did this, and it turned out beautiful!  The house sits on an incline, so the garage faces the same direction as the house, with a staircase along side between the side of the house and detached, at the top of the stairs there is a sidewalk connecting the patio to the upper detached and we installed a small balcony/sitting area overlooking the driveway to fill the vacant space; there is a side door accessing the upper portion of the detached garage and the front of it mimics the style of the house (which has 3 dormers) the detached garage has 3 smaller dormer windows in the upper part of the detached.

  4. I like your idea of a 2 story garage. that way you have more storage space for holiday decorations that are way out the way and up off the ground in case of flooding ( not flooding flooding just a lot of water in the garage like the freezer melted in there) to keepsakes safe. Also it will let in light and really blend with the existing house
