Where is a nice, interesting and different, but not horrendously expensive place to take a girl to dinner in London. I’ve just met a fantastic girl and want to take her somewhere cool on our first date. I feel like I have no idea where to even start looking!

  1. Ok, a really cool and very different place to take her is The Sugar Hut.  It's a bit pricey but worth the experience.

See the 360 view.  Thai food. Fulham.

  2. Add a note to your question and tell me which area you would like to go, how much you wish to spend and the type of food you would like to eat - and I will make a few decent suggestions.

  3. The Engineer in Primrose Hill or The Salt House in St John's Wood.

  4. You weren't specific about budget but I assume that you want somewhere with good atmosphere for a first date.  One excellent place would be Hakkasan, a Chinese restaurant near Tottenham Court Road which despite being in a basement has one of the sexiest dining rooms in London - beautifully lit and stylish, with a nice bar.  It is not "horrendously expensive" but it is not cheap either, but has perhaps the best Chinese food in London.  Similarly nearby in Charlotte Street is Roka, with Japanese food and a lovely basement bar, but again not cheap.

A couple of places with a view are the Oxo Tower on the South Bank and the new Galvins at Windows at the top of the Hilton Park Lane - here you would pay maybe £45 or so each for the food plus drinks, which may or may not be too expensive, but would be romantic.  The Wolseley has a beautiful dining room and is not very pricey, doing simple bistro food.

For a date though I would recommend the Notting Hill Brasserie, which has dark lighting and often has a discreet live jazz duo (piano and bass) playing queitly in the background.  The food is extremely good and the atmosphere quiet and welcoming.

For atmosphere more than food you could go to Gilgamesh in Camden Town, which serves Asian dishes in a vast, opulent setting, or the Blue Elephant in Fulham, which has tolerable Thai food in an amazing room awash with tropical plants - there is even a stream running through the restaurant.

Hopefully one of these will appeal.  For reviews and contact details see my web site below.

  5. Carluccio's. Not sure which suburb its in, but it overlooks the water, I think its in London. Relaxed, friendly, atmosphere, perfect for a date. Not too expensive, not overly romantic, and fantastic food. She'll love it.

  6. the queens tavern
