  1. the chilean currency is the chilean peso. the exchange rate is 540 pesos per dollar and unlike the rest of latin countries, the exchange stays the same for long periods, meaning it isnt volatile. if u want to compare that with the us dollar in terms of purchasing power, economists use what they call purchasing power parity, ppp, which measures the value of goods and services a chilean peso buys relative to the us dollar. our average per capita income in chile in ppp is like 12,000 us dollars whereas the nominal per capita income is $7,000. at the same time, the us per capita income is like $45,000 both nominal and ppp. what does that mean? it means domestic prices relative to income allow us a better living standard worth $5,000 relative to the nominal per capita income. do u follow me? in practical terms it means that a person who makes $25,000 a year is upper middle class here whereas in the us that would be a blue collar income. get it? overall in most developing countries, like chile or argentina, ppp income is higher than nominal income in us dollars as the cost of living is lower than that of the us. that of course is only valid in chile or argentina. in the us the chilean average per capita income would be just nominal, meaning, for example, a glass of whiskey would cost 2 times in dc than what it would cost in chile. it also means a $30,000 car is relatively cheaper for an american than for a chilean, as those $30 gs would buy a lot more things in chile than in the us. hope this helps!!
