  1. you simply wait till exam time and move up, it sounds like you are doing tap, to improve with pull backs lean on a barre and pratice the movement with your feet as this gets easier move to the centre and try if you still cannot do it go back to the bar or practice pick ups on one foot

  2. I will assume that you go to a dance school, not in a team. I will also assume that at your school they do not move students up a level per year, but base it on their ability. This sounds like a really good school, which doesn't rush pupils too quickly.

Once you advance to higher levels within dance, it does take a lot longer to master the skills in those levels. If you have been in that level two years now, do NOT be worried. If it has been 5 years or something like that, I would be a little concerned.

Does your school offer levels higher than the one you are at? If not, you should talk to your teacher about extending you and your classmates more. If there are higher levels, and you are not being moved up, this is also something to address.

Do you take class less than everyone else? How much do you practise? Has your flexibility improved? How good is your technique? These are all things teacher look at when deciding who moves up.

My ultimate advice - please please talk to your teacher on not just moving up (which could be classes as complaining or whining) but also how you can improve enough to move up. Ask to talk to her privately, and say something like "Miss so and so, I really really want to be moved up into a higher class soon. How can i improve my dancing enough to be up to that standard? Is there anything I need to work on? What can I practise at home?" This will show your teacher that you want to move up into a higher group, but you are not being pushy or whiny about it. It also lets her know you want to improve your dancing.

Secondly, practise practise practise! I bet you'll get a lot of responses saying this, but like the saying goes, practise makes perfect!

  3. I hate all of the practice, practice, practice comments. Pff duh. It sounds like you are physicking yourself out. Don't sweat it! What helped me improve a lot was strength, spotting, and stretching. Oh my god, I didn't even know how to turn until this year because I hadn't danced since I was 8! My teacher yelled at me to spot. It doesn't matter the dance move, spotting is key. Keep your head up and try to look at one spot the whole time. It will help you remain balanced. Also, not looking at the people around you will help you remain calm. Eye contact all depends on confidence, so tell yourself that the only way you will be better is if you let your body do what it needs to do. Good or bad, ignoring everyone and knowing you can do it gives you confidence. With no confidence, you may be staring at the floor, which makes you fall! Being a great dancer takes a lot of strength too! Make sure you find activities that work your abs, being able to pull up takes a lot of strength from your core. Finally, flexibility is key. You will feel much looser when you dance, and splits make you look really skilled. =] I completely understand your frustration. I always feel that I'm the worst when I'm with a group of competitive girls or ones who have danced longer than me. I hadn't danced for 7 years until this year! Sweetie, it will work out. And I agree with the person above me, dance teacher knows best! Ask her for exercises and advice. Hope I helped you! =]
