I've been reading about plastics and their toxicity. Now I want to reduce the amount of plastics I surround myself with. Any tips or web sites that would help? Anyone know where I can get glass "Tupperware"?

  1. ::::::::::>  ewg.org .....got alott of info i think u might benefit off of ... microwave is also really bad u should get a toaster oven...we got rid of our microwave ...its not even good to stand in front of it if ur still gonna use it ....let alone heat radiate ur food

  2. Plastics are more toxic when heated or cooled substantially.  so do not freeze things in plastic, or heat them (especially in the microwave).  For the latter, use ceramics covered with parchment or wax paper.  Freeze things in glass, or aluminum foil THEn covered in plastic wrap (as long is it's not in direct contact with the food).  Use reusable fabric bags for shopping, metal silverware and ceramic plates or china.  The Pyrex storage containers are great; just don't fill them so full that the food touches the plastic lids.  And for reheating, take off those lids and cover with wax paper.  Foods and liquids at room temperature in plastics SHOULD be relatively safe.

  3. I am also trying to get plastics out of my life, but the supermarkets aren't helping much. Just about everything we touch is packagedin plastic. What I don't understand is: whydothey also package fresh fruit in plastic trays with clingfilm round them, or just the cling film? It's totally pointless.

You could at least minimise what you buy that comes wrapped in plastic, and these days, what isn't?

Try the link below for info on toxins in plastic.

  4. this is really good of you to try something this hard, but the benefits are immeasurable.

dont drink bottled water, its one of the stupidest inventions ever.

  5. COrnign has nice containers that is microwavable.  The top is either plastic or rubber though.   I just recycle glass jars.   I have some of those jars with the clamps on top, but it has a rubber ring.  Shouldn't be a big deal.

I find it odd how the baby boomer generation makes such a big deal about recycling when their parents do a lot more of it.   I look at old houses and they all have baby food jars that they use to keep nails.   The generations after that decided they neednice looking containers made of plastic.

If you need to by jars, you could by Mason jars.  I think Kerr makes some.  I have a case I never use.

  6. at this point, your best bet would be to make yourself a hut up in vermont somewhere and live off the land.  plastics are everywhere these days.

  7. No, but you can find cloth grocery bags to reuse and at some places they save you money. You can also recycle that will help.

  8. Get rid of your toothbrush...your TV...your CAR...etc.

Face it:  Plastics are part of our society - for better or for worse...

  9. Well you could use canning jars to store food in and some stores still carry Pyrex dishes to store food in also. Grow a garden and learn to can vegetables. Use your own cloth bags shopping. Learn to make mayo from scratch as opposed to buying it in plastic jars etc

We also use foil to store leftovers sometimes and just ball it up and

put in the recyclables container. We use cast iron for cooking and don't

have a microwave,we steam all our vegetables it's just healthier and cast

    iron seems to last forever.

  10. Looks like your going to have to run around naked, and throw your computer out your window too, plastic is in almost everything we use today. Be careful when you touch them plastics keys on you key board, maybe you should get some latex gloves on first. GET REAL, plastics are here to stay.
