I recently removed a tree but it had grown into the chain link fence so its still about 4ft high. I want to know the best way to kill it. I can not burn itit right next to the house. I have been putting rock salt on it but it still has new growth sprouting. Any suggestions are welcomed!

  1. You can try a product like Stump Out, which helps accelerate the decomposition of tree stumps by making the stump porous. When kerosene or fuel oil is poured onto the stump and the stump is ignited, it can burn down to the roots. It's safe, easy to use, non-explosive, will not harm surrounding vegetation, and because stumps do not burn with any open flame or billowing smoke when treated with this product, it may still be used in locales that prohibit open burning. Note though: the whole process may take several weeks. You can buy it at: http://www2.yardiac.com/long.asp?tgs=205...

  2.      The stump is already pretty much dead, but letting it rot away would take years. Contact a tree/stump removal service, they can use a "stump grinder" to remove it. You may have to at least partly remove the fence, at least temporarily to allow for the stump to be removed.

Believe me, its better to take it away now and pay a little money than to live with a rotting, termite infested 4ft stump for years to come. We had an unsightly stump in our front yard for a little over a decade and a stump grinder took it away in about 30 seconds.

  3. You could try cutting the stump down about an inch and immediately paint the fresh cut with a brush/woody plant killer.

  4. Man, have I had to do that before.  The best way I found was to dig all the way around the roots and start rocking it back and forth.  I had 12 foot tree stumps in my front yard and my husband was able to remove them without any new growth this way.  He also used a hatchet to cut off the small roots that were attached to the stump them covered them back up with dirt.  It's a bit of work, but it worked.

    Good luck!
