My birth father doesn't know his father, but his mother told him his name a long time ago. He says it's Herendezin...maybe Hernandezin, Herhendenzin... something along those lines. The name is Mexican in origin, but I can find nothing with any spelling I try. Can someone maybe help me? As far as he knows the family is currently living in Michigan and has Mexican and Native American roots.

  1. The best way to find out would be to have him take the DNA test.  Either www.ancestry.com or FamilyTreeDNA.

Ancestry has a 1/2 off sale right now if you are a member.

FTDNA is having a sale also (I guess because Ancestry is)  It's until 8/31/2008

Y-DNA12 orders include a FREE mtDNA test (Y-DNA12+mtDNA promotion price of $99; normally $189)

Y-DNA25 orders include a FREE mtDNA test (Y-DNA25+mtDNA promotion price of $148; normally $238)

Y-DNA37 orders price REDUCED to $119 (normally $189)

Y-DNA37+mtDNAPlus orders price REDUCED to $189 (normally $339)

Y-DNA67+mtDNAPlus orders price REDUCED to $288 (normally $409)

mtDNAPlus price REDUCED to $149 (normally $189)

He would need at least the Y-DNA25 test

Search for your dad's present last name and join that project to get the discount.. When the results come back you can transfer to the other names  project.

  2. Hi, I'm not finding Herendezin, Hernandezin, or Herhendenzin at either Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org.  Of course, the most common surname similar to the spellings you provided would be Hernandez, but it sounds like you've ruled that out already.

Let's start another way, since we aren't sure what the last name is.  Do you know what state in Mexico they came from, and/or what town?  That could help us narrow down what the last name is.

Do you have your Grandmother's full name at birth, date, and location?  Did she marry your Dad's Father, and if so, when and where?  That information should help tremendously as well.

How long has the family been living in Michigan?  Do you have the names of the family members who left Mexico and moved to Michigan, and the approximate year?

I hope I can help more, let me know if you have some of this information to help me search for you.

    edit-

Some similar, Americanized names are Hernandon, Herndon, Harnett, Herendon, etc.  (found these on Ancestry.com)

  3. It would probably be worth checking out some Spanish geneology sites too if you have Mexican roots.  The name you give does sound like it could be Hernandez or a variation on that spelling.

  4. there are many web sites you can go on and they will give you a list of all last names recorded tht spell close to tht name ive done it is free and easy :)
