Help me my mom wants to burn a lot of papers?

Question

She brought back home boxes of confidential papers from her office saying that they all needed to be burned.

I offered to shred the paper using the shredder and send them to the recycling center so she brought the machine home from her office only to find out that it was broken.

I told her I'd do anything to make the papers unreadable so that they can be recycled but she won't listen.

I could try to tell her about what paper burning does to the environment only that I know she won't listen.

What do I do?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the recycling of paper just harm us in different ways?  What about the power that the recycling plant uses to recycle the paper?  What about the chemicals they use to break down the paper and remove the dye? What about the bleach they use to make it white again?  What about the emissions and the run off waste all this causes?

Just get a shredding service.  They will do the shredding and recycling.

Where does she intend to burn them? Do you have a fireplace or will she be doing this outdoors?

If in a fireplace: burning paper generates a lot of creosote (not sure of the spelling) that coats the flue and chimney and can lead to a chimney fire.

If outdoors: many places have restrictions on outdoor fires.

You can also tell her to sell them or recycle them. This way our Mother Earth can not be dystroyed.

We have 1000's of forest fires each year, EACH of which produces more smoke than a MILLION people burning boxes of papers in their back yard.

We do not change the weather.

We can not even predict the weather more than 2 hours in advance.

Stop worrying, and let your mom alone.

Leave your mom alone, forests fires happen every year... go help the californias, or better yet donate all your free time to hurricane victims or something else stop pestering your mom! were all going to die any ways... theres no stopping the climit now...

Dump all of the papers into water (bathtub or huge basin). Soak it. When it's soft tear them into small pieces and discard. If you like you can take the wet torn papers and mold them into shapes of boxes or containers by adding starch or glue and leave them to dry in the sun and use it before discarding them.

Let her burn them.  Burning papers will effect the atmosphere like spitting in the ocean will effect sea levels.

It's more important that her information be kept confidential.

try convincing her into recycling the papers in a positive and negative way  or write a letter give it to her and say :

mom if you won't recycle then ..."you say whats going to happen

yes i know, confidential stuff . well u can try soaking them in water, but if that is alot of paper, haha hope u enjoy doing it.coz u hav to dry. may be if u hav young simbling, u can tell them to draw stuff on it, paint it, do wat ever on it, if u cant recycle them, use it as scrap paper. might be useful when u wanna do yr math.

It sounds like you mother's business is out of FACTA compliance.  They need to document the destruction of their confidential information.  Taking them home and burning them is a big legal risk.

I would try telling her about the effects and if you are really that desperate i would invest in bying a paper shredder i use mine all the time.
