Help me out, looking for as close to possible WWII Sniper Rifle?

So heres the thing, after seeing At Enemy Gates (for the 3rd time), a movie about 2 WWII Snipers dueling it out. I'v been looking for the name of the old rifle the main character used, I found it and its called a Mosin Nagat 91/30

i want to purchase one(though somebody will have to for me since im too young). but i want a "as close as possible" original one.

and I'v seen the term "Ex-Sniper" around, what exactly does this mean, can it still be used as a sniper, or is the scope mount plugs welded and is now just used for a normal rifle

well if you know a good amount about guns, preferably a lot about the old WWII rifles, just email me at XDudeSurrenderX@hotmail.com

but i dont check in that often on my email, so if you do have msn, if you could just list your email.

I'll need help finding a quality rifle.

thanks

  1. The 91/30 was my first rifle. I'll admit, I chose it for the same reason. My next was the Mouser K98k, which is what the German used.

You have 2 choices: pay thousands for an actual 91/30 sniper, or pay about a hundred bucks for a 91/30 that is exactly the same, but was just a rifle (not used for sniping). If you want, a few hundred will get you the same type of scope and mount used by snipers, and you can mount that to make your own.

I personally have a problem with mounting scopes onto milsurps, or modifying them at all. I treat them like museum pieces except that I do fire them often.

Also, check your laws to see if it is legal for someone to buy a rifle for you. Some places won't allow it. If it's your parents, that might be ok.

As for where to find a 91/30, I bought my first one in a sporting goods shop. Big 5, Academy Outdoors, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, or any other type of hunting supply store (or regular gunshop) is likely to have them, or tell you where you can get one. Mine cost $89, I bought it about three years ago. I also recommend impactguns.com, but I warn you that the waiting time for an out-of-stock item is a year or more. My Mosin M44 and 2nd K98k both took 14 months. AIMSURPLUS.com also sells them. Paying a little bit extra for an excellent quality "hand-pick" is highly recommended, since you don't get to see what the options are.

Right now is a great time to get into Mosins, as there are thousands coming in from recently uncovered surpluses in the former Soviet Union. Good Luck.

  2. An Ex-sniper is a 91/30 sniper that has had it's scope removed. You can tell if it is one by lookin on the inside of the receiver, there might be two spot welds where the s***w holes used to be. You can get ex-snipers easy by looking around but mosins that still have the scope attached cost much more than your regular mosin. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/...

And someone else buys a gun for you that is called a straw purchase, and that is illegal.

  3. reality check

The Russians were indeed using Mosin Nagant 91/30 during world war two.  The sniper rifle was just whoever was in charge of rifles would take 10 guns out, shoot them, and pick the one that shot the best, put a scope on it, and issue it to a sniper.

Later, in the guns termed 'ex-sniper' they pulled the scope and mounts off, and sealed the s***w-holes.

A 'geniune' russian sniper rifle would just be a Mosin that someone never got around to removing the scope on.

As all 'russian sniper rifles' of WW2 are just basic Mosins with scopes slapped on I would suggest buying a basic mosin rifle

Then, if you desire later, add a period appropriate scope.

note, on the scoped sniper models listed, those are genuine 91/30s, but the scope is a modern remake  "These are PU style scopes of recent production in the former USSR"

If you buy a rifle and a scope seperately, you will save money

so $100 for the gun $200 for the scope, $50 to get it installed = win

  4. Ex-Snipers are just as you thought.  They usually have screws, welds or plugs placed in the threaded holes in the receiver and then ground down.  They could probably be re-drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

There are some reproduction 91/30 snipers that are made by drilling and tapping a 91/30 and then fitting a new manufacture scope base and an original PU or PEM scope.  The typical cost is $500+.  Another possibility is that you can get a 91/30 for usually 80-90 on sale and the scopes and mounts are usually still available.  The last one I saw was $275. If you can find someone that can drill and tap the receiver, there may be a cost savings.

  5. You are right about Jude Laws character using a Mosin Nagat 91/30 (sniper version). This is the closest you will come without having to pay more for the real deal.

  6. 91/30s scoped t look like snipers are available at any of the online gun suppliers

it is not really cost effective to buy a Mosin and then install the appropriate mount and scope

By the time you get dome with shipping fees transfer fees and gunsmith fees you will have ended up paying more

    I checked that out myself

    And no Fatefinger

Someone buying a gun for someone else is a legal gift no a straw purchase

    No to you to opinionatedmedic

A straw purchase has nothing to do with whether the recipient is prohibited or not it is only concerned with where the money came form

It also has nothing to do with who gives him the gun

Again it opnly matters whose pocket the money came form

    ======================

You forgot the bent bolt Luis add $50 plus shipping

A friend recently had the Mosin style scope mount installed and it costs him right at $100

  7. Here you go kid, just something to drool on until you can con somebody into buying it for you. Save up your paper route and birthday money from Granny. You do know that it's the shooter not the rifle that makes a sniper right? If you remember the movie the first rifle he used came off a dead body and was nothing special his training and experience is what made him a great shot not the rifle.

  8. Do not pay any more for an "ex-sniper" Mosin than a regular 91/30. They are worth nothing more.

Look at the fake snipers at AIM surplus, or you can occasionally find a genuine authentic 91/30 sniper for sale. They are not "thousands", more like $700 to $900. I have two, so I wish they were worth "thousands".

You really want the scope mount, which are easy to find but expensive and a WWII era Russian PE type scope. The bolt handles were not standardized, every armorer that put together a sniper's package usually bent and hammered the bolt himself.

  9. i think its a DE456 sniper Rifle.....or mabay the daloen sniper Rifle named after the man who created it

  10. Fatefinger its not illegal if his dad buys it and gives it to him as a gift. Its only straw purchase if its not legal for him to own a gun for some reason. Technically if his parents give it to him after they have bought it, then hes just using their gun til hes old enough to own it.

  11. look in the shotgun news,i have seen k98 and m91 sniper rifles for as little as 399.00
