Help me out, teachers. What grade would this child be in?

If a child was born in July of 2000, what grade would she most likely be in?

I think my son was in fourth grade at 8 but turned 9 the end of november. He started K at age 4.

But that was a very very long time ago.

Most kids start school when they are five. Our school district makes sure the kids are five by Sept 30 of the school year.

So that means this kid could have started kindergarten in Sept 2005.

So he would have started second grade in Sept 2007.

However, sometimes when kids have summer birthdays parents will hold their children back if they don't feel they are mature enough for school. This often happens with boys.

So if that was the case, the child would have started first grad in Sept 2007.

So, probably in second grade. Will be going into third grade in September.

The child would be 7 yrs. old - not 8 until July. That would place her in the 2nd grade. However, if she had been retained she could be in 1st, but there is no way she'd be in 3rd unless she skipped a grade, which is very unlikely for a child that young. Most grade skipping does not happen until fourth grade or higher.

A child born in the summer of 2000, would not turn eight until school is out.  The child would have been seven when the school year started, so she would have been entering second grade.

Each state has different cut-off dates, though, so it is POSSIBLE, she would be in first grade.  Check here for more information:

Now if the child started at a private school, which does not have to follow state cut-off dates, she could have started early and be in third grade.

But in the most likely scenario, the child would now be finishing up second grade.

If you are specifically going by enrollment dates, being 8  years old by September and assuming she began kindergarted at age 5, that would put the child in 3rd grade. One important question to ask is how far is the child in their mastering of 1st and 2nd grade curriculum?  If you are unsure of this, you can either go to 1st , 2nd and/or 3rd grade teachers and confer with them in order to ascertain the present educational level of the child.  Some help websites for teachers  also offer examples of curriculum found in  different elementary grades, if you wanted to try to figure it out on your own.  

If you talk to teachers directly, they should be able to provide an assessment of the child's academic level and recommend the grade level in which the child belongs.

It depends upon your state.  Each state has a cutoff date (mine was July 30) that stipulates that a child must be 5 to enter kindergarten.  This can be bypassed if the child tests into kindergarten early.

My daughter way born at the end of July 1999 (one year older than the child you mention) - she is finishing 3rd grade this year.

My neighbor's daughter and my nephew were both born in December 1999, just 5 months after my daughter, and they are in 2nd grade.

Go to the state department of education for your state to see what the cutoff date is.

As for your question, I would say 2nd grade, but it is possible that she may have been held back because of a late birthday and maybe an old 1st grader.
