I just started getting into fishing and was wonder whats a good fishing rod to start out with. I'll probably be fresh water fishing for bass, cat fish, crappie, etc and maybe once in a while fish in the bay. So do anyone have a good suggestion of which rod to get. Right now I'm looking at Ugly Stik, something affordable and good. Thanks

  1. The Ugly Stik would be the best choice in my opinion. Some people may disagree with that, but for the value, you simply can't beat it. It's true they may be a little heavy and not as sensitive or responsive as more expensive rods, but for a beginning angler, it has the right amount of sensitivity and response for you to enjoy a day of fishing. They are "strong" as heck too. I have been fishing for years and own enough different rods for a whole crew of fishermen, but I still use my Ugly Stiks when the situation calls for it. I love my Ugly Stik rods. They have lasted for years while I have broken several "expensive" rods. Don't break the bank to keep up with the Jones'. While it is certainly not the best rod out there, the Ugly Stik would be perfect for you!

  2. dude the ambassadeur on an ugly stick is a good start!   i am now up to all-stars and Cast away rods, callcuta  reels. lets go fishin', your boat or mine? p.s. I get to run the trolling motor? ok? lol. good luck and just enjoy the piece and quiet of the outdoors.

  3. OK, for as much as I despise them for the type of fishing I do, I must admit that the UGLY STIK would be a good choice due to its toughness and durability, not to mention it being very affordable.

What you must realize is that you will not be purchasing a sensitive rod

because most UGLY STIKS are made of a combination of graphite and fiberglass. While the glass makes the rod more durable and "clumsy friendly" as well as more bendable, it also adds weight and detracts sensitivity.

That being said, for general purpose fishing using live bait in a variety of waters, you could do much worse.

  4. your looking at the right rods, ugly stik are the way to go. since you will be catfishing and bay fishing i suggest a medium action rod. hope this helps...i dont know if you need to know but i would put an ambasaduer reel on it of any kind

  5. go with an Ugly Stick. I have two and I swear by them! I have tackled several cats (and others) with them and they bent so much the tip of the rod touched the reel. with and Ugly Stick, your line or reel will break before the stick does.

  6. Ugly Stik

  7. Ugly Stik is definitely the way to go for someone just starting out.For what you're fishing it'll suit you just fine.If you want a rod/reel combo you can get an Ugly Stik combo from Walmart for around $30.Combo or rod alone,it's still a great value and perfect for beginners.
