  1. Hello Joseph

First talk with the counselors at whatever place you are getting your meds.  They may know some good resources for you including some temporary housing.  Things are still pretty torn up down there which complicates things but if you go to http://www.switchboard.com you can enter shelters for the category and Slidell LA for the place and there seem to be quite a few resources.   Catholic Charities may also be able to help with either getting into a shelter for short term or a couple of week's rent for a room and maybe a bus pass.   Salvation Army probably has shelter too  LA Social Services can help you hook up with Food Stamps and also give you a directory of helping places.

I don't know what job skills you have but you may be able to get a job that includes a place to stay,  Check out motels for work on grounds or maintenance or desk clerk.  Any resorts that you can get to may also have jobs like that,   Look for construction crews that travel and may provide housing or have an arrangement with motels where you pay at the end of a week when you get paid.  Campgrounds like KOA may hyave maintenace type work or other things too and be willing to pay in part with a place to stay,   Next best thing is to work nights so you can sleep days wth fewer hassels than if you were trying to crash by the lake at night.   All night eating places are a good possibility ones near a hwy exit are sometimes associated with a nearby motel and can sometimes arrange a sleeping place.   Sometimes too a friend may be more open to your catching some sleep on their couch and taking a shower if you are not going to be there at night,   If there are more affordable camplin places open now a tent can be a cheap place to stay till you get some $$ again.

Check out day labor places too where you work a day and get paid that same day.  It is usually minimum wage or just over it but if you can find a fairly cheap room you can survive till you get something better,

BTW if that guy or any other place you've worked in the last couple of yrs took out taxes you can probably draw some unemployment too.

  2. Joe, if you're living in a city, go buy a newspaper. Look in the rental section. Sometimes you can find an affordable room for rent. I was paying $65/week in Indianapolis for a room. You might have to share a bathroom and kitchen, but it's better than sleeping outdoors. Check the newspaper, internet, and go out looking for places that are hiring. If you are in a city, you can get a monthly bus pass for around $70/month. That's better than walking. Look into any government assistance programs. You are recovering from addiction and might be eligible for certain free programs that could include job placement. They might make you jump through some hoops, but it could be worse. It's not prison. Get a state ID, if you don't already have one, and make sure you've got the right paperwork. Programs like that involve lots of paperwork. Get a folder for your important papers, so you always know where they are. Good luck.

  3. The first poster has some really good answers, I would do those things!

PS -- Often you can find furnished rooms for rent on the second stories of bars or restaurants.
