can anybody tell me how this quote shows courage?

this is the quote:

"He poured out at his feet a Rain of arrows from the quiver and spoke to the crows. So much for that clean cut is over".

I think that the crows signify death (because you know they feed on the dead) and it sounds to me that he was shooting arrows at death, basically defying it, so that would be considered courage.
