My car was stolen a few months ago and I reported it to the police who were not interested. I have been looking on various web sites in hope and would you believe it there it was for sale. here is where it gets tricky I have found out now from the dvla that my son has forged my signature and put it in his name this being 2yrs ago. He does not live at home and wasnt at that time, however mail easily intercepted post box at end of drive.

I got back onto the police and they just dont seem bothered. I am the only person that has insured it taxed payed repair bills etc, and nothing has ever suggested that it was not in my name. I even have the original log book. The person who bought it from my rat of a son is known to friends of mine. It is know registered to the person he sold it to and may be an inicent party to all of this. Last time I saw it it was sitting in my drive.

Dont know what to do police do not seem bothered I have the master key would I be braking the law if I just went and got it or are there any other suggestions?? need to act quick as it may be sold on very soon

please help

  1. If you claimed for the car on your insurance and they paid out then it now belongs to the insurance company not you. They would probably not be interested now though, I'd just get in it and drive it away!

  2. You are going to have to go to the police and if they still don't help then you should put a complaint in.

Don't go and get it yourself as the person who has it will report it stolen and you could end up getting nicked.

Its sad when the police let you down and as an officer I find it frustrating when things like this happen. When you speak to them again get the details of the officer and if they fob u off then speak to their supervision if its still not resolved then complain.

As for your son, I think he deserves to be shut out of your life for ever and if I was a violent person id kick him in the tessies, which as an officer I wouldn't advocate. ;O)

  3. Although you state that the police are not interested, you are wrong. You give me the impression that they haven't bothered doing anything. You have reported it to them. Perhaps you feel that because they haven't had a dedicated team of detectives at you beck and call , they haven't done anything.

You need to contact the police to find out what they have been up to. They are duty-bound to investigate this matter on your behalf. It also sounds like you can name the offender. Also inform your insurance company(it was insured wasn't it?).

  4. As long as you can prove ownership then it is yours and you are entitled to take it.

The fact that it is registered to someone is irrelevant because they are only registered as the "keeper" not the owner.

  5. how about talking to your son?

  6. I'm sorry to say but how could your son of changed the ownership of the car with out you knowing if you have been taxing the car for the last 2 years, every 6 months or 12 depending on if you get half year or full year tax they send you a reminder letter, you use that letter to re-tax your car, how could you not notice that the name on the letter was not yours and if your son had changed the address why would the reminder letter come to you.

any way to answer your question you can not go and get the car coz according to the law the new keeper owns that car the police can not do anything coz you can now not prove that you did not sell the car to your son or give it him.

i don't think your son is that stupid to admit to stealing the car so i think you have been had coz it will be your words against your sons
