How does fluorescent light compare to incandescent light in terms of the way the light is produced?

In an incandescent light, a hot filament gives off light.  The filament is heated by electric current.

In a fluorescent light, an electric current is passed through an ionizing gas, which gives off light as a result of atoms changing energy states when "excited" by the flow of electrons.
