  1. (this girl) is loco

  2. Let x = cost of a pair of shorts

    .....y = cost of a pair of socks

    "2 pairs of shorts and 3 pairs of socks for $33"

    2x + 3y = 33

    "1 pair of shorts and 5 pairs of socks for $27"

    x + 5y = 27

    system of equations:

    2x + 3y = 33

    x + 5y = 27

    I will use the elimination method. Multiply second equation by -2.

    The system of equations becomes:

    2x + 3y = 33

    -2x - 10y = -54

    ----------------------

    ........-7y = -21

    ..........y = 3

    Plug in 3 for "y" in one of th equations and find "x".

    x + 5y = 27

    x = 27-5y = 27-5(3) = 27-15

    x = 12

    Shorts cost $12 per pair and socks costs $3 per pair.

    check:

    2x + 3y = 33

    2x+3y = 2(12)+3(3) = 24+9 = 33

  3. Let:

    h = cost of a pair of shorts

    s = cost of a pair of socks

    We're told that 2 shorts and 3 socks costs 33, so:

    2h + 3s = 33

    And also that 1 shorts and 5 socks cost 27, so:

    h + 5s = 27

    we have two unknowns and two equations . solve .. I'll set h in terms of s in the 2nd equation, then plug into first equation to solve for s.

    h + 5s = 27

    h = 27 - 5s

    2h + 3s = 33

    2(27 - 5s) + 3s = 33

    54 - 10s + 3s = 33

    -7s = -21

    s = 3

    Now solve for h, plug this into either equation above:

    h = 27 - 5s

    h = 27 - 5(3)

    h = 27 - 15

    h = 12

    Each pair of shorts cost $12.  Each pair of socks cost $3.

  4. let x=shorts

    y=socks

    2x + 3y = 33

    1x + 5y = 27

  5. x = shorts

    y = socks

    2x + 3y = 33

    x + 5y = 27

    -2x -10y = -54

    -7y = -21

    y = 3 = price of socks in dollars

    x = (33-9)/2 = 12 = price of shorts in dollars
