Hii first off I am a 13 year old girl and I recently got my palete expander. I didnt have to turn it for a week so I guess that helped me adjust to it. But today was when I had to start turning the key which would make the palete expander tighter. I tried not to complain because I wanted to try to suck it up but the truth is it really does hurt. I was eating dinner and I finally couldnt take it anymore and started to cry because it hurt soo bad. My mom get all mad at me because she says I need to suck it up and deal with it and I know I should but I also want some support because it is only going to get worse. I really dont want to cry because it hurts and I dont want to stress my mom about but how can I convince her that I cant just let it go because it really does hurt?

Someone please help =(

  1. I had to do that too. I'm 23 now though. Tell your mom it's like labor pain with no epideral but in your mouth, mabey then she'll take you seriously. I used to have to run out of class and just cry my eyes out from the pain. There is no "sucking it up". And I know your only 13 but they should of prescribed you vicodin, that's what I got. But I was also 15. Just talk to your mom and explain that crying is a natural reaction to pain, and nobody on this earth can control how they react, to ANYTHING.

  2. Wow your mom is a strange one.  This is an unnerving procedure.  You are not being a baby, it hurts.  Forget about the just "sucking it up" advice.  For now try to relax and listen to music that you can chill out to.  Did the doctor give you any meds for pain?  Next time you are in the office alone with the doctor tell him that what your mom said about just sucking it up.  Your doctor needs to talk to your mom about being a support base for you.

Know that this will pass and it will be all behind you.

  3. Turn it before you go to bed and not before you eat so you will not have to deal with chewing while it hurts.

Ask your mum if you can have an appointment with your orthodontist so that you can talk to him about your pain rather than your mum who cannot advise you as best as he can.

Tell her that you want to make this work but the pain is too much for you to bear. Please could she let you speak to your orthodontist about the best way of dealing with the pain as it doesn't seem right that it should be hurting so much.

Maybe it just needs adjusting or maybe you just need some advice. Tell her you know she can't help you but you think that he probably can.

Don't hide the fact that you are crying - your mum needs to see how much pain you are in.

The truth is always the best answer - good luck :)
