  1. Lots of ghosts, magic, etc.

  2. What themes are present throughout both books?

The idea of prophecy--Are the prophecies inevitable, or are the self-fulfilling?  Would things have been different if the prophecies were never made?  Or never heard by those whom they are about?

Ambition--Why would ambition drive someone to evil deeds?  Who in both books has the desire for more power, and uses violence (or does things they wouldn't usually do) to try and fulfill those ambitions?  What happens to them?  Are they able to stop?  Does more power leave them fulfilled?

Cruelty and masculinity--how is the concept of manhood and being a man correspond to cruel acts? Could manhood be equated with violent deeds?

Kingship vs Tyranny--Are any of the leaders struggling with the difference between being a ruler or a tyrant?

Visions/Hallucinations--what role do these play in both works?

Blood--what does blood symbolize in each work?  Guilt? Purity?  Power?

Weather--how does weather and other natural/unnatural occurrences reflect important elements of the plot?  (Thunder, lightning, storms, etc.)

I hope this stimulates some ideas.  Good luck!
