    "If you GET THE UPPER HAND over someone" - it means that you get in a stronger position so that you can control them ".

    2. have one's hand full

    be very busy, have a challenging job

    4.get something off one's chest

    to relieve oneself of (problems, troubling thoughts, etc.) by revealing them to someone.
