Question:

Help me save my weeping cherry tree?

I planted my beautiful little weeping cherry tree about a month ago. It's about five tall and had a few little green leaves on its little branches. Now it's turning brown. I fed it miracle grow when I planted it and have been sure to water it deep. Can you offer any suggestions how to make it healthy and save it from dying? Thanks so much for any advice or knowledge that you can share.

  1. Most common scenario for a newly planted tree is too much, or too little water.

If the branches are still flexible, and not brittle, then it's not dead.  Keep watering as usual.  How often and how much you water depends on your weather, your soil type, and how big a tree.  If it's a small tree, 2-3 times a week.  A very large tree, once a week.  Put an open-ended hose directly over the rootball (no attachment or nozzle on the end), turn it on to a trickle so the flow is about the size of a pen, and let it run for 15 minutes for a small tree, up to 45 for a large rootball (one that's 2'1/2 feet across).

I also don't recommend using fertilizer with a newly planted tree.  you dont' want to encourage a lot of new top growth when the roots are not yet establishes and may not be able to support extra growth yet.  A root stimulator would be good, but hold off on fertilizers until next year.

When the weather turns cool in the fall, back off on the watering to maybe once every 2 weeks.  After the first frost, stop altogether.  If you have heavy soil, you might want to check it before watering - if there is moist soil several inches down inside the rootball - don't water.

  2. maybe too much water ? have you had the soil tested ? take a soil sample to  your county cooperative extension they will test it for free . i have a weeping cherry , i do nothing to it and it grows like crazy  .
