1. -4x2-13x-3=0

the 2 after the -4x is a squared.

2. |5 - 0.2x| + 3= 14

the | | marks around the 5- 0.2x are absolute value marks.

  1. You have to factor #1. I hope your teacher taught you how to use the FOIL method in reverse when factoring quadratic equations. FOIL stands for First, Outside, Inside, and Last. You have to split the x^2 (the ^ symbol means an exponent follows) into two sets of parenthesis to be multiplied together.

    The factored answer is: (-4x - 1)(x + 3) = 0, if you set each of the parenthesis equal to zero you get your final answer.

    -4x - 1 = 0 and x + 3 = 0, both answer are correct and necessary. Just solve for x now to get that x = 1/4 and -3

    To answer #2, you have to get the absolute value portion by itself on one side of the equals sign by subtracting 3 from both sides to get:

    |5 - 0.2x| = 11

    Then, create a positive and negative equation to be able to get rid of the absolute value:

    5 - 0.2x = 11 and 5 - 0.2x = -11

    Solve each equation for x, and you have your answers (again both answers are correct and necessary):

    -0.2x = 6......x = -30

    -0.2x = -16.....x = 80

  2. -4x4-13x-3=0

    combine the x's

    10x4=0??????

  3. 1. -4x²-13x-3=0

    multiply both sides by -1

    4x² + 13x + 3 = 0

    factoring

    (4x + 1)(x + 3) = 0

    x =  - 1/4

    x = -3

    2. |5 - 0.2x| + 3= 14

    |5 - 0.2x| = 11

    5 - 0.2x = 11

    0.2x = - 6

    x = - 30

    or

    5 - 0.2x = - 11

    0.2x =  16

    x = 80
