Help me start my car!?

I just bought a 93 ford probe gt a friend had the timing belt had jumped some teeth. So i put a new timing belt on it and have checked it to make sure it is tdc many times and it is. It now has a new fuel filter, new injectors, new gas ( it sat for 3 years with cheap gas in it), and new spark plugs. I have also checked the inertia switch in the trunk and it is ok. Any ideas??? Here is a video thanks in advance.http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/1badmaxx/?action=view&current=tringtostartwhiteprobe003.flv

In the vid when it sounds like it is going to run it is in flood clear mode (foot to the floor) that is the only time it sounds like it will start.

  1. another reason why you don't buy a ford ... ****** Only Runs Downhill! ... Found On Road Dead ...

  2. Did you have to remove the distrubator?  It may be 180 degrees out (that means it is 180 degree rotated from where it should be).  Also try moving the distrubter around slowly to see if you can get it start.  With every thing you changed, assuming it was all done correctly there isn't much left as far as fuel delivery and spark goes.  Have you done a compression test.  This will tell you if something has failed internally(it won't diagnose all internal failures just the ones relating to the combustion stroke of the engine)

Edit --> I bet the distrubutor is in wrong.  You need to use the manual for the car to set it at TDC(top dead cetner) for cylidner 1 then you will need to check the where the rotor is pointing. Make a mark on the dizzy where the number one wire connects to the cap.  When you remove the cap the rotor should be pointing to the point where the wire for the number one cylinder would be.  Even if your car has a computer controlled dizzy, the dizzy still has to be close for the car to run.  With a computer controlled engine the timing should usually be set to 0 degrees.   If you can only move the dizzy one way you may have to pull it and re install it after rotating a little.  When you have the dizzy in and the rotor points to the number one wire then you are close and you should have some movement on either side.  After you can get it to start you will need to get a timing light and find out the procedure for setting the timing on your vehicle.  It usually invovles disconnecting a wire or setting a jumper wire that tells the computer not to advance the timing while it is being set.  Lastly double check to make sure the timing marks on the cam and crank are still lined up where they are supposed to be.  It can be very difficult putting the belt on and keeping them lined up properly.  Sometimes it takes a few tries.

  3. sounds like the spark somewhere maybe the number on the dizzy .....I think you should do a full engine flush and drain the gas cause if it sits it just turns into vinegar ....

  4. It sounds like the fuel pump is bad. I bet that will fix it.

  5. the timing is off! when you put the belt on, the cam moved with you. there should be a gage hole in the cam sproket to put something like a drill bit in it to keep it from moving until you get the belt on. and when you got the piston all the way up, did you turn the crank to top dead center?

  6. your injectors are clogged. The gas that sat in it for so long fouled your injectors. Check to see if you are even getting gas to the engine. The filter could be plugged with bad gas varnish as well as the fuel pump sock. Reviving, or in your case, resurrecting a car that has not been preserved is a maddening challenge. Stay after it!! Good luck and I hope this helps

  7. Maybe The Distributor cap and rotor

  8. Your right it does sound like it is about to start, I would make sure you have the right spark plug and/or try putting another one in

  9. I would run a compression test, if the original belt slipped it could have damaged the valves or pistons and the ensuing lack of compression will cause it to not quite start.

If the compression checks out I would advance the timing because it sounds like it is retarded, I don't see why it would be though.

If the distributer does not turn to adjust the timing it means the computer handles the timing and you should check the cam and crank sensors to make sure they are connected well. Also you mentioned you made sure the engine was at TDC when you put the new belt on but did you also make sure the cam was in its proper position? both cam & crank need to be properly positioned when the belt goes on to keep proper cam timing. Even one tooth off will cause problems.

    Good Luck!
