fill a glass trough with water about half its volume. place a small piece of sodium in the trough after completely removing the kerosene using a filter paper(sodium is kept in kerosene ), observe the changes . put a litmus paper made of hibiscus flower and observe.

1- is it a fast reaction?

2-what is the reason for the change in colour of litmus paper?

3- what is the nature of the substance produced?

  2. 1- The reaction of Sodium (Na) with water is a very violent and an extremely dangerous reaction. It's so exothermic, that it's heat and enormous energy released, will burn hydrogen, ith flame.... Visit this link to see it:

    2- The reaction that takes place is:

    2Na(s) + 2H2(l) ---> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g).

    Since a base is formed in the products' side, it will turn red litmus blue.....

  3. Don't actually do this experiment - you'll end up wearing it....

    1.  Sodium reacts quickly and violently with water to make sodium hydroxide and hydrogen:  2Na + 2H2O ----> 2NaOH + H2

    2.  The litmus paper will turn blue in the presence of base.  Your reaction made sodium hydroxide, whic is definalely basic.

    3.  Answered in 2.  product is a base
