  1. Person-centered psychotherapy or counseling has been around since the 1940's.   However the terms "person-centered" and "student-centered" have since been applied to a variety of other professional methodologies.  In general, a person-centered or student-centered approach tends to be (1) humanistic, (2) holistic, and (3) individualized.  Today's special education practices are based largely on these principles.  For examples, IEPs or Individualized Education Plans, are both a prescription for teaching with the express purpose of attaining detailed outcomes for a specific student as well as a legal contract for the delivery of consumer services, the details resulting from informed consent and negotiation between the parties (also known as the IEP team members).

  2. Person centred planning is just that. Person centred not what other people think what is wanted.

In UK it is now the buzz phrase for those who work with people with learning difficulties.

In short you make your own decisions so let the client make their own decisions. Obviously guided by common sense on the part of the carer.

eg. What do you want for breakfast?

Not WE are going to have cereal and toast.etc.

  3. In Client-Centred Therapy the client is seen as capable of becoming aware of problems and the ways to solve them. Focus is on the present moment and experiencing & expressing of feelings.

Therapy provides a safe 'space' for self-exploration for clients to move toward openness and greater trust in self. It is a useful approach to teaching, parent/child relations, and multi-cultural group situations.
