Earths crust and the lithosphere.. are they the same thing?

I've heard that the crust is the outermost layer of the earth, like if it were an apple, it would be the skin.

Supported in this picture right? The outermost part?

But then I came across a link about the lithosphere.

http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/earthsci/units/introduction/lithosphere.cfm

"The section under "crust" refers to the Earth's lithosphere. There are two different ways to express the composition. The chart shows which elements are most abundant by mass and by volume. As you can see, Oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth's crust (lithosphere) by both mass and volume. Silicon is the second most abundant element by mass. Potassium is the second most abundant by volume."

Now this is what confused me, in this they say earth's crust is the lithosphere.

But now, in the diagram the first one, the lithosphere is below the crust...

  1. the lithosphere consists of the crust and the upper mantle.

  2. the lithosphere is the crust and mantle then comes the asthenosphere. :)

  3. The division between crust and mantle was made before the theory of plate tectonics, so I don't think the term "crust" carries as much weight as it once did.  The crust and rocky part of the mantle form the lithosphere.  The slushy part of the mantle is the asthenosphere. The crust is only part of the lithosphere, not the whole thing.
