Hey! I have a new Hamster, Delilah, (DeeDee for short) and she's really sweet. She loves me, she trusts me, and I've had her for 2 1/2 days.

But.... at the pet store, she drank from a water dish. I have a bottle for her, and I don't think she knows about it or how to "use" it!!!

What do I do? I don't want her to get dehydrated and.... die!

Please Help!

Thank you!

  1. you could replace the water bottle, and use the lid of a drinks bottle, wash it out well, and put water in it and leave it in the corner for you hamster to drink, thats what i did with my first hamster because he refused to use a water bottle

  2. what a cute name for your hammy! A few years ago I had 1 named candy! Anyways keep an eye on her and if you see her drink from it your ok but if not when she goes near it try pushing the little ball in and let the water drip out and maybe she will figure it out

  3. I have trained my hamsters to drink from both bottle and dish.

2 and a half days is not enough for your hamster to get adjusted to her new home.

let her get used to it.

Observe her...if you notice that she doesn't drink water, you could either follow the dish to bottle step the other user mentioned, or hand feed it.

    Here's how you do it.

Point the bottle pipe towards your hammy's mouth and press it a bit so your hammy notices the water drops falling (don't press to hard)...then your hammy will try to sniff and drink.

then adjust the bottle where you want it to be, and whenever your hamster comes near it, press it slowly so your hammy can notice it,  and them drink. Make sure you don't let the cage get wet.

This method works almost all the times.

That is how I taught my hammy to use the bottle...he used to drink from bowls in the store too.

Most hamsters usually figure it out themselves though.

I wish you and your hammy all the very best.

(Switch to bowl if your hammy doesn't drink from the bottle at all)

  4. Start out by having a small water dish by the bottle. Then, gradually, day after day take out more water and show her that water comes out of the water bottle. soon take away the dish but if she refuses to drink out of the bottle, put the dish back in and start over.

  5. My guess is that the hamster is a bit confused and still getting used to her new cage. This happens to hamsters when introduced to new environment since they are creatures of habit. I am sure she would figure out herselves how to use the bottle in a few days, until then leave a water dish in her cage and make sure that there is always a drop of water hanging from the tip of the hamster bottle so that your hamster gets attracted to it and learns to drink from the bottle.

  6. put a shallow water dish under the water bottle and put some water in it. then kind of show her how to use it, by tapping your finger on the end. keep doing this every day and she will eventually get the hang of it.

  7. Ok here is what you do try to show her that water comes out of it some how and if she doesn't drink from it soon switch to a water bowl asap good luck with DeeDee

  8. Don't replace the bottle with a dish, because when you're not watching, she can fall asleep in the water dish and drown!

Instead, put her favorite treat that she can l**k on the end of the water bottle. Peanut butter, yogurt, cream cheese...anything but butter (it's unhealthy). Then, when she licks the bottle tip, she will understand that water comes out when her tounge touches it. Keep adding more treats to the bottle tip and stop once she gets the hang of it.

  9. maybe you could bring her to the water bottle a few times and maybe later on she will know that if she wants to drink water she can go there!hope i helped:-)
