  1. **Start with the LDS site.  It's pretty self-explanatory and free, to boot!  Then go to ancestry.com and use the free sites they have.  From there go to your library and see if they have any databases on their computers that may help.  They may even have a large section of books in the history section that deal primarily with genealogy.  The court house is a wonderful treasure trove of information.  You could spend days there going from department to department.  If they have an archives section, start there.

Good luck!  It's an addictive thing to do.

  2. You can look up the census online for free or the social security death index.

  3. try the library then cort house

  4. All of the above would work. Ask your relatives first and get as many names, dates and places as you can, then begin the hunt for records to go further.

    www.familysearch.org

    www.genforum.com

    www.gencircles.com

www.usgenweb.org then go to state then the county.

Just remember old stupid Sherman went through Georgia and burned the courthouse to cause caos during the civil war. He did such a good job that there are few records left in the courthouses before 1863, unless they were recreated later.
