Dear Diary,
Its know it has been a while since I wrote. For a while I have been known to be the amah of the children of the Warners who were American missionaries. I was lucky enough to gain this position thanks to my skill in English and my teacher Miss Gilbertson. Miss Gilbertson and the Warners were friends and since they mentioned that they needed a nanny for their children to teach them English Literature.
Their children's names were Bill and Grace. While Grace was a shy child, I saw much of my younger self in Billy. I also included teaching them Chinese writing and tell them Chinese stories. These were like rewards to them. But all this had to stop when the houseboy told the Warners. They did not want their children to learn about Chinese traditions. So only when they were not around I snuck a story here and there.
The day when the Warners left back to America I had to watch over the kids. But that task became so frightening when Billy came down with a fever. That day I realized so much. Since I was in American clothing I was not accepted to enter to Second Sister's home because the people who saw me did not see me to be just like them. They saw me as an American missionary by my clothing. I seem to have adapted to the missionary's way so much not even those of my own home recognized me. Lucky enough I found Miss Gilbertson who knew the family doctor and was able to call. At least I now understand why father gave me this diary. It was to see the change in myself as time passed. Better check on the kids to see if they are sound asleep. Good night!
Sincerely,
Eileen Tao
