Here the problem:

An elephant, a hippo, and a rhino weigh 4500 pounds. If the elephant weighs 3 times as much as the hippo, and the rhino is half the size of the hippo, how much does each weigh?

And can you explain to me how to do it?

  1. e be elephent

    r be rhino

    h is hippo

    e=3h

    e +r+h=4500

    2r=h

    e=6r

  2. elephant weighs 3,000 pounds

    hippo weighs 1,000 pounds

    rhino weighs 500 pounds

    hippo=1000

    elephant is 3 times the hippo, which is 1000 times 3 = 3000

    rhino is half the hippo half of 1000 is 500

    elephant =3000 + hippo=1000 + rhino=500 equaling 4500 pounds

  3. hi

    i think its like that if the elephant was 3 times the hippo that means they r 3 and 1 and as long the rhino is half that equals 0.5 so in that case the elephant weighs 3000 the hippo 1000 and of course the rhino is 500 .

    this is what i think they weigh good luck

  4. Since the weights of the elephant and rhino are compared to the hippo, let's call the hippo's weight "x".

    The elephant weighs 3 times as much as the hippo. We'll call the elephant's weight "3x".

    Finally, the rhino weighs half as much as the hippo, so we'll call the rhino's weight "1/2 x" or better yet "0.5x".

    Here's what we have to work with:

    x = hippo.

    3x = elephant

    0.5x = rhino

    We also know from the problem that the combined weight of the 3 animals is 4500 pounds, so...

    x + 3x + 0.5x = 4500

    Combine the like terms, and you get...

    4.5x = 4500

    Divide both sides by 4.5, and you get...

    x = 1000 = hippo's weight

    To get the other two weights, use 1000 as x:

    3x = (3 * 1000) = 3000 = elephant

    0.5x = (0.5 * 1000) = 500 = rhino

    Check your answers by adding the three weights:

    1000 + 3000 + 500 = 4500

  5. 500 + 1000 + 3000 = 4500

    since the rhino is half the size of the hippo, the hippo is half he size of the rhino.

    So let X = the size of the hippo

    let 2X = the size of the rhino

    Since the Elephant is 3 times the size of the rhino, multiply 2X by 3 which makes it 6X

    6+2+1 = 9

    4500 ÷ 9 = 500 which is X

    2X = 1000

    3 X 1000 = 3000

  6. The Elephant weighs 3,000 pounds

    The Hippo weighs 1,000 pounds

    The Rhino weighs 500 pounds

    You divide 4500 by 3 and double it to get 3000, which is the weight of the Elephant. If you divide 3000 by 3, you get 1000, the weight of the Hippo. Divide that by 2 and you get 500, the weight of the Rhino. 3000+1000+500= 4500.

  7. Start with the lowest common denominator for this one. The LCD is the smallest critter, the rhino. The hippo is 2x. The elephant, at three times the weight of the hippo, is 3(2x), or 6x. Follow? Now how many total x's we got? It's 1st grade addition: 1x+2x+6x=9x And the total weight is 4500 pounds, so 6x=4500. Since you need the3 value of x, isolate it on one side of the equation by dividing both sides by 9. And there you have it: x=500 pounds. Thus the rhino weighs 500, the hippo 1000, and the elephant 3000 pounds. This feat of magical mathematics was brought to you courtesy of an English major, no less, who cautions you to remember how to do this sort of thing to calculate the best price at the supermarket.

    A calculator is of no use unless you ask it the right questions, dudes and dudettes.

  8. let E = elephant, H= hippo, R = rhino

    4500 = H + 3H + 1/2

    4500 = 4H + 1/2

    9000= 4H      because u multiply 4500 by 2/1 or just 2, which is the reciprocal of 1/2

    H = 2250

    Hippo = 2250

    Elephant = 3*2250 = 6750

    Rhino = half of 2250 which= 1125
