Help me with my stupid bike chain!?

My bike is a 7 speed Trek 200 mountain bike with Shimano gearing. Every time I really step it up and pedal hard the chain slips, it never comes off though. Also, what is the best way to lubricate the chain?

  1. the best  way is to take yourself to the bike store and buy a bottle of oil only like ten dollars then follow the instructions on the bakc and bam ur good

  2. This may not be an issue with lubrication.  If it only happens when you're mashing the pedals, the chain might be stretched.  Take a ruler and measure from the center of one cylinder link 12".  If that mark doesn't come exactly in the center of another cylinder, then your chain is probably stretched and should be replaced (like $5).

You also might want to check that your gears (front and back both) are not worn out and all the teeth are still sharp.

Still, the most likely culprit is that dirt and debris is caught in your chain and needs to be cleaned off and re-lubed.

  3. Crisco

  4. Take the bike to a shop and ask for a quick gear service or gear tune. Get them to recommend a chain lube to you. You'll have to clean the chain before putting it on.
