Question: A motor scooter travels east at a speed of 14 m/s. The driver then reverses direction and heads west at 18 m/s. What was the change in velocity of the scooter?

Comments: Okay, I know that the direction is west, but I'm not so sure about the magnitude. I did this on some website that checks the answers you put in, so I know that it's not 4 or -4. This is quite confusing; I have no clue what it could be... Any help? Please explain yourself.

Thanks!

  1. it goes from +14 in the east direction to +18 in the west, or -18 in the east, so it goes from 14 to -18 in the east direction, or changes -32 m/s

  2. change in velocity =Vf-Vi

    By convention:

    direction of vectors: east(+) west(-)

    change in velocity = Vf-Vi=(-18)-(+14)

    =-32 m/s

    Visualize:

You are on the scooter going east at 14 m/s.

At some point, you jump off that scooter, and you

jump on another scooter going west at 18m/s.

Your change in velocity is (-18)-(+14)= west 32m/s

    =(-32m/s)

  3. Sorry the change is 14+18, which is 32. probably negative 32
