A certain bank vault is made of 10cm thick reinforced steel walls. During an especially cold winter, the power goes out over the weekend, and the water pipes inside the vault break. The vault fills completely with water. The temperature of the water drops to -20 degrees Celcius and stays there for over three days. Which situation describes what would have happened?

A. The steel walls would bend or break as the ice freezes

B. The walls would keep the ice from expanding as it freezes

C. The walls would keep the water from completely freezing

D. The water would not freeze; however, once the door of the vault was opened, the release of pressure would cause the water to freeze instantaneously.

Please give me your answer and a brief reason why you chose it!! Thanks!

  1. A. As water freezes it expands but the water needs space to so it would break. The water is liquid but when the temp. drops the water turns to ice which is a solid.

  2. why would there be water pipes inside a bank vault? the pipes would be inside the walls, or outside of them... but not just raw and exposed... and if somehow the vault flooded... well there would have to be an opening for the water to get in... so that would allow for it to expand.

and if they built a vault with pipes for fire regulation junk... there would have to be a drain in the floor.

and why would the pipes explode form a power outage?

  3. I would say "A" because ice needs room to expand, and steel walls don't move, so therefore, they broke.

  4. B
