  1. was it always like that or has it developed over a period??

Perhaps there is so much it has to do eg. a lot of unnecessary items at start up.  I suggest you install, from

www.iobit.com  "Advanced windows care V2 personal"

(free)   It scans everything and repairs. you will be shocked at how much it finds on the first scan  I do it at least once a week.    You can type into Google  Advanced windows care V2 personal, Download

Also you can download free AD-AWARE  SE (Free)

which will scan and clean up the dodgy stuff in your computer

Also  Spybot, search and destroy which scans for spyware and removes it

  2. start the computer then go make some tea/coffee (which evers your posion) come back log in, go back down make somethink to eat, then come back to the computer. LOL

go to www.download.com and download a startup manager. (check on the control panel by typing control panel in the address bar at the top first and then look for somethink called startup) from there you can just simply uncheck all the programs that you dont want to start up.

    other things i would do:

1 uninstall Norton firewall, Norton antivirus and any other norton programs that you have as thay slow the computer down a lot.

2 download avast / avg antivirus, and zone alarm for a firewall (there free and not as demanding on your computer)

3 download ghost wash and run it to get rid of all the temp files. (these slow down the computer aswell)

    4 download adaware.

    5 defragment the hard drive.

(all downloads mentioned can be downloaded from www.download.com )

  3. Click the start button then enter all programs then accessories then system tools then system info. Check the available physical memory and compare it to total memory. You need at least 200 MB of free memory to run programs. You may need to add memory if  the pc can take anymore or delete unused programs for run space.

  4. Check out how much space is left on your computer

  5. You have a problem

  6. Do a scan do detect if there's anything in your computer that shouldn't be there. And get the latest upgrades from your security software provider.
