  1. make sure you are not using chlorinated water (which is the water that comes out of the tap)

also my algae eater didn't always mix with certain fish.  Make sure the fish are compatible

additionally, is your tank large enough for all of them, are you cleaning the tank regularly (and not relying on the algae eater for everything) are you using a filter? make sure you keep the temperature at a constant for your fish.

there are lots of things that may be stressing your fish out.  Most importantly make sure the water is not tap water and that the fish have a large enough tank otherwise, they are suffocating.

  2. Get some oxygen in the water PDQ, Are you using an air pump?

May help to change the water.

If this doesn't help get some advice from your pet store.

  3. Change the water maybe, and call the pet store to see if you have the right combination of fish (some don't like each other).

  4. It's the same answer as yesterday, http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind...

You have an ammonia spike, that's the onion smell. It was caused by overfeeding and no water change whilst you were on holiday.

You need to get as much of the c**p out of the gravel as you can with a 50% water change, rinse your filter medium under a tap to get rid of any lumps, but if there isn't any wring it out in the used tank water. If you have a spare air pump additional aeration will increase gas exchange and lower your nitrite/nitrate levels increasing cycling.

All you can do after that is daily 10% water changes till your water comes back to normal. The 6 fish will recover quite quickly the SAE has been burned by swimming about in ammonia and will take longer to recover.

If you don't act quickly - like yesterday, you will loss all your fish. It is a matter of urgency.

  5. to answer your question we need a few details, what kind of fish, what size tank, what filtration, how often do you change water, do you use dechlorinator, do you test for nitrites, nitrates, ammonia? if you answer these we may be able to help. personally i would do at least a 50% water change, make sure you use dechlorinator before adding the water to the tank, or you will kill off the good bacteria colonies. i will edit to help if you answer my questions.

  6. Not enough oxygen!

  7. Sounds like your water is poorly oxygenated. This could be because you are stocking too many fish in too small a tank. It could also be because your water quality is bad - do you carry out weekly water changes? Also if you do not have one - buy a filter - these are essential in aquariums.
